Excavator working on rural Middle Tennessee acreage surrounded by trees and field

Free On Site Excavation Quote What to Expect

August 19, 2026

Getting a quote on excavation work makes people nervous, mostly because they do not know what is about to happen. Is somebody going to walk the property with a clipboard and a sales pitch? Do you need surveys and drawings ready? Will you get a number that day or a week later?

Here is exactly how a free on-site quote works with us, and the four things worth having ready before we pull in.

Why we come out instead of quoting over the phone

Anyone can throw a per-acre number at you over the phone. The problem is that the price of excavation work in Middle Tennessee is decided by things you cannot see from a photo: how wet the ground stays, how thick the undergrowth is under the tree canopy, how far it is from where a truck can park to where the work happens, and whether there is limestone six inches down or six feet down.

Two properties a mile apart in Maury County can price very differently. Walking it is the only honest way to quote it — and it is free, whether you hire us or not.

What actually happens when we get there

Plan on 30 to 60 minutes for most properties. Longer if we are walking a lot of acreage.

  1. We start where the equipment has to come in. Gate width, driveway strength, low limbs, tight turns, and overhead power lines all decide what machines can reach the work. This is usually the single biggest surprise on a quote, so we look at it first.
  2. We walk the work area with you. You show us what you want gone, dug, drained, or leveled. We ask what the finished ground needs to do — hold a barn, drain away from the house, carry a truck year round — because that changes the approach.
  3. We look at the ground itself. Soil, slope, standing water, rock outcrops, existing drainage, and where water goes when it rains hard. If there is a wet spot, we want to see it, not hear about it.
  4. We talk about spoil and debris. On a clearing job, brush and stumps have to go somewhere: mulched on site, burned where allowed, or hauled off. That decision moves the price more than almost anything else, and it is yours to make.
  5. We flag anything that needs a permit or a utility locate. Driveway tie-ins to a county road, culverts, ponds, and anything near a utility easement have their own steps. We will tell you which ones apply.
  6. You get a straight number and a realistic window. Not a range with a hedge on both ends — a price for the scope we just walked, in writing, with what is included and what is not.

The four things to have ready

None of these are required, but each one makes your quote faster and more accurate.

  • Know where your property lines are. Corner pins, a survey, or even a flagged fence line. Clearing to the wrong line is an expensive mistake to undo, and if the lines are genuinely unknown, we will tell you it is worth getting them established first.
  • Know what you are building, if anything. "Clear this" and "clear this for a 40x60 shop with a concrete slab" are different jobs. If a builder gave you a pad size, finished floor elevation, or a plan, have it handy — that is what turns a rough grade into a build-ready pad.
  • Have a rough budget in mind. Not to spend it — to shape the work. Most projects can be phased: clear now, grade and gravel later. If we know the number you are working with, we can tell you what to do first for the most value instead of handing you one all-or-nothing price.
  • Point out anything buried. Septic tanks and drain fields, wells, water lines to a barn, propane lines, invisible fence, old field tile. Utility locates cover public lines; the private ones on your property are the ones that get hit, and you are the only person who knows where they are.

Questions worth asking us while we are there

A quote visit works both ways. Ask what the ground will look like when we leave, how long the job takes once we start and what weather does to that, whether you should expect ruts and how they get fixed, and who is actually running the machine. You should be talking to the person who will be on the job, not a salesman who hands your property off to whoever is available.
